Life Inside the Cloister : Understanding Monastic Architecture: Tradition, Reformation, Adaptive Reuse
Thomas Coomans
- Leuven University Press

- 9789462701434
Sacredarchitecture as reality and metaphor in secularised Western societyChristian monasteriesand convents, built throughout Europe for the best part of 1,500 years, are nowat a crossroads. This study attempts to understand the sacred architecture ofmonasteries as a process of the tangible and symbolic organisation of space andtime for religious communities. Despite the weight of seemingly immutablemonastic tradition, architecture has contributed to developing specificreligious identities and played a fundamental part in the reformation ofdifferent forms of religious life according to the changing needs of society. The cloister is the focal point of this book because it is both architecture, aphysically built reality, and a metaphor for the religious life that takesplace within it. Life Inside the Cloisteralso addresses the afterlife and heritagisation of monastic architecture insecularised Western society.

14/18 - Rupture or Continuity : Belgian Art around World War I

The impact of the Great War and its aftermath on Belgian artistic life
World War I had a major effect on Belgian visual arts. German occupation, the horror at the battlefield and the experience of exile led to multiple narratives and artistic expressions by Belgian artists during and after the war. Belgian interbellum art is extremely vibrant and diverse. 14/18 - Rupture or Continuity takes a look at Belgian artistic life in the years around the First World War and how it was affected by this event. The Great War was a catalyst of artistic oppositions, leading on the one hand to a Belgian avant-garde that explored new forms and styles, while continuing to uphold a more traditional and established art on the other. Whereas the war experience consolidated an already present style for some artists, for others it constituted a revolution leading to new artistic adventures. The collection of essays in the present book highlights these contrasting facets of Belgian art in its rich historical context during the early 20th century.

Girl with Dead Bird : Intercultural Observations
Volkmar Mühleis
- Leuven University Press

- 9789462701373
Lifeand death in a sixteenth-century masterpieceThe portrait we havecome to call Little Girl with Dead Birdis an enigma. On the one hand, we hardly know anything about thissixteenth-century masterpiece. But even so, on the other hand, the picturefascinates viewers to this day. This painting's indeterminate yet compellingstatus provides Volkmar Mühleis grounds to look beyond its historicalsignificance and to explore its anthropological scope as well, from anintercultural perspective and, moreover, against the backdrop of its complex ofthemes concerning life and death. To do so, Mühleis returns to the conceptualpremises that frame the relationship between the history of art and theanthropology of images, along with those that juxtapose Western and Easternphilosophies.

A comprehensive history of the interaction between religion and colonization
Religion in today's Democratic Republic of Congo has many faces: from the overflowing seminaries, the Marian shrines of the Catholic Church, the Islamic brotherhoods and the Jewish community of Lubumbashi, to the 'African' churches of the Congolese diaspora in Brussels and Paris, the healers of Kimbanguism, the televangelism of the booming Pentecostalist churches in the great cities, the Orthodox communities of Kasai and the 'invisible' Mai Mai warriors in the brousse of Kivu. During the colonial period religion was no less central to people's lives than it is today. More surprisingly, behind the seemingly smooth facade of missions linked closely to imperial power, also then faith and worship were marked by diversity and dynamism, tying the Congo into broader African and global movements.
The contributions in this book provide insight into the multifaceted history of the interaction between religion and colonization. The authors focus on the institutional (including legal) political framework, examine the complex interaction between indigenous and 'imported' non-African religious beliefs and practices, and zoom in on the part religions played in the independence movement, as well as on their reaction to independence itself.

Migration and Integration in Flanders : Multidisciplinary Perspectives

Thought-provokinginsights on the nexus of migration and integration beyond the national context
Across the world, and due to ongoing globalisation, migration is increasingly becoming a part of daily life. But more than ever, migrationcan no longer be viewed as a simple linear trajectory from A to B. Theemergence of transnational communities and intense interactions between regionsof origin and of destination have led to new forms of social-cultural praxisand (sub)cultures which exert an important influence on the integration of immigrants. The case of Flanders, the northern part of Belgium and at the centre of EUpolicymaking, is presented as a case study in this book.
Migrationand Integration in Flanders isstructured in three thematic parts, opening with chapters on the imaginaries andperceptions of people in changing migration contexts. The book then proceedswith chapters which present theoretical and empiric data on changingintegration dynamics in multicultural societies. The final chapter concludes witha discussion of social networks' mediating role. The growing complexity of migration leads the contributing authors to lookbeyond borders, both of national frontiers - as migration by definition impliescross-border research - and of disciplines and research methods. In doing so, the presentvolume offers thought-provoking essays on topical issues that stir public andpolitical debates across Europe, and contributes to fundamental discussions onchanging societies.

Powers of Divergence : An Experimental Approach to Music Performance
Lucia D'Errico
- Leuven University Press
- 23 Avril 2018
- 9789462701397
Beyondresemblance: creative divergence in music performanceWhat does it mean to produce resemblance in the performance of writtenmusic? Starting from how this question is commonly answered by the practice ofinterpretation in Western notated art music, this book proposes a move beyondcommonly accepted codes, conventions and territories of music performance.Appropriating reflections from post-structural philosophy, visual arts andsemiotics, and crucially based upon an artistic research project with a strongcreative and practical component, it proposes a new approach to musicperformance. The approach is based on divergence, on the difference produced byintensifying the chasm between the symbolic aspect of music notation and theirreducible materiality of performance. Instead of regarding performance asreiteration, reconstruction and reproduction of past musical works, Powersof Divergence emphasises its potential for the emergence of the new and forthe problematisation of the limits of musical semiotics.

Transpositions : Aesthetico-Epistemic Operators in Artistic Research

New modes of epistemic relationships in artistic research
Research is a process thatleads to new insights rupturing the existent fabric of knowledge. To preventthis process from disintegrating, its coherence must be assured. Under theheading transposition, seventeenartists, musicians, and theorists explain how one thing may turn into anotherin a spatio-temporal play of identity and difference that has the power to expandinto the unknown.
While it does notattempt to define the still evolving field of artistic research, through theidea of transposition this book aims to grasp a quality increasingly importantto artistic practice because representational approaches have been losingtraction. Taking to heart the lessons of deconstruction, new modes of epistemicrelationships are being invented that include aesthetic dimensions. Workingwith materially concrete positions in a manner familiar to artists can ensurethat knowledge does not decay into relativism.

Beyondmusical works: new perspectives on music ontology and performance
What are musical works? Howare they constructed in our minds? Which material things allow us to speakabout them in the first place? Does a specific way of conceiving musical workslimit their performative potentials? Which alternative, more productive imagesof musical work can be devised?
Virtual Works - Actual Things addresses contemporary music ontologicaldiscourses, challenging dominant musicological accounts, questioning theirauthoritative foundation and moving towards dynamic perspectives devised bymusic practitioners and artist researchers. Specific attention is given to therelationship between the virtual multiplicities that enable the construction ofan image of a musical work and the actual, concrete materials that make such aconstruction possible. With contributions by prominent scholars, this book is awide-ranging and fascinating collection of essays, which will be of greatinterest for artistic research, contemporary musicology, music philosophy, performance studies and music pedagogy alike.

Freud's Dora case and contemporary debates on gender, sexuality and queer theory
'Dora' is one the most important and interesting case studies Sigmund Freud conductedand later described. It constitutes a key text in his oeuvre and finds itself atthe crossroads of his studies in hysteria, the theory of sexuality and dreaminterpretation. The Dora case is both a literary and theoreticallyground-breaking text and an account of a 'failed' treatment. In Dora, Hysteria and Gender renowned Freudscholars reflect on the Dora case, presenting various innovative and controversialperspectives and elaborating thesignificance of the text for contemporary debates on gender, sexuality andqueer theory.
This volume is ofinterest for psychoanalysts and scholars working on psychoanalysis, sexuality, gender, queer theory, philosophical anthropology and literary studies.

Beyond Provenance : New Approaches to Interpreting the Chemistry of Archaeological Copper Alloys

Humanintentionality in chemical patterns in Bronze Age metals
For the last 180 years, scientists have been attempting to determine the 'provenance' (geologicalsource) of the copper used in Bronze Age artefacts. However, despite advancesin analytical technologies, the theoretical approach has remained virtuallyunchanged over this period, with the interpretative methodology only changingto accommodate the increasing capacity of computers. This book represents aconcerted effort to think about the composition of Bronze Age metal as theproduct of human intentionality as well as of geology. It considers the traceelement composition of the metal, the alloying elements, and the lead isotopiccomposition, showing how a combination of these aspects, along witharchaeological context and typology, can reveal much more about the lifehistory of such artefacts, expanding considerably upon the rather limitedambition of knowing where the ore was extracted.
Beyond Provenance serves as a 'how-tohandbook' for those wishing to look for evidence of human intentionality in thechemical patterning observed in bronzes.
