Architect Jeanne Gang argues that the agricultural technique of «grafting» can help building design adapt to climate change. French-language edition.
Jeanne Gang, one of America's most distinguished contemporary architects, proposes using the ancient plant-cultivation technique of grafting in both architecture and urban design as an effective strategy to address the urgent issue of climate change. Grafting is the biological process of connecting two separate living plants so they can grow and function as one. This ancient practice continues to be performed today in search of more fruitful, palatable, and resilient varieties of plants.
Grafting is also an incredibly useful and untapped paradigm for how architecture can begin to cope with climate change on a broader, more impactful scale because it is predicated upon our existing building fabric. The term «grafting» has the potential to inform architecture across many scales, provoking the imagination and shaping tectonic, programmatic, formal, and regenerative adaptations. -
First monograph on the work of Paris-based design and research firm LAN (Local Architecture Network)
Features LAN?s 28 key designs to date through photographs, plans and concise texts
LAN is one of the internationally most recognised French firms of the younger generation
LAN?s previous books Paris Haussmann and Napoli Super Modern are ongoing major international successes
Benoît Jallon and Umberto Napolitano founded their Paris-based design firm LAN (Local Architecture Network) in 2002 with the aim of researching architecture at the interface of several disciplines. This broad approach enables them to find new and unconventional solutions in response to social, urban, ecological, and functional challenges. Their designs include a vast range of typologies and functions at various scales. They have realised buildings in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia, and are also pursuing projects in the Middle East and Japan.
In addition to their award-winning structures, Jallon and Napolitano have earned wide acclaim as well for their research work and the two previous books originating from it: Paris Haussmann (2017/2020) and Napoli Super Modern (2020). LAN?28 Projects is the firm?s first monograph, featuring 28 key designs to date through photographs, model photos, drawings, and plans, supplemented by concise texts. -

Valerio Olgiati's latest book is about the beauty of the very varied buildings designed by the Swiss architect, captured in colour photographs and plans. The 15 projects, around half of them realised since the publication of Olgiati's most recent monograph in 2018, are featured in this exquisite small volume for the first time as finished buildings.
Indoor and outdoor shots show Olgiati's intuition for spectacular buildings and atmospheric interiors - from the museum for the UNESCO world cultural heritage site in Bahrain to the Celine flagship store in Miami, from the office building for Baloise Insurance's headquarters in Basel to the bedroom of the French fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquiere, from the visitor centre of the Swiss National Park to the atelier for the musician Linard Bardill in Scharans.
They are presented through colour photographs, floor plans, and sections. The elegant book design follows the style of Olgiati's highly successful previous book, The Images of Architects. -

Today, Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-91) is something of a cult figure of European post-World War II architecture. The Dutch Benedictine monk and architect dedicated his life to the search for fundamental principles of architecture, and his thoughts on numerical relationships and dimensional systems were highly influential in mid-20th-century architectural theory.
A House to Live With is the first book to comprehensively explore van der Laan's residential buildings. Sixteen of them, built between 1966 and 1985, are featured in full detail through photographs and plans newly produced for this book, and analysed with regard to their compositional and design principles. Essays examine the mathematical relationships of numbers and volumes that are fundamental to van der Laan's designs, alongside discussion of how he was influenced by ancient Roman architecture. Light is shed also on the interplay of house and garden and house and patio, and the positioning of the one large table in the house, which to van der Laan was of key significance.
Thoroughly researched and highly readable, this volume introduces Hans van der Laan's architectural ideas and housing designs in full, thus forming a rich and useful source for contemporary architects.

Trees, Time, Architecture introduces living plant construction as an important tool to improve the climate in our cities. In the form of a magazine, the volume brings together a variety of views on the relationship between trees and architecture, urban spaces, modernism, politics, feminism, and cultural values. This collage of historical, research-based and creative perspectives looks at how living trees can be preserved, used, and appreciated in the Anthropocene by taking into account their temporal dimension. It highlights ancient examples of living plant architecture, such as the root bridges of the Khasi people in India, Nordic mythology with its representation of a tree as a cosmological symbol, and the architectural use of living trees in the Roman Empire.
The essays, photographs, memoirs, film reviews, and conversations in this book are supplemented with exemplary architectures, new research approaches, and current design methods. They illustrate dynamic processes in which trees play a key role as constantly changing organisms. They invite a transdisciplinary examination of relationships between people, trees, and architecture, as well as their rethinking and further development in our time of constant change and limited resources. -

Montessori architecture : a design instrument for schools
Benjamin Staehli, Steve Lawrence
- Park Books
- 25 Janvier 2023
- 9783038603153
The first book to explore how the architecture of Montessori schools compliments the intent of the program.
The name Maria Montessori is widely associated with a child-centered and careful pedagogy. Montessori schools became trendsetting educational institutions early on, and their philosophy is strongly reflected in their equipment, adapted environment, and architecture.
Montessori Architecture is the first book to comprehensively address the architectural design, construction, and use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Maria Montessori's visionary ideas. The book's first part explores spatial design patterns that make up exemplary kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies from Europe as well as from tropical countries are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. This highly illustrative book offers a wealth of information and practical guidelines for architects, teachers, and others engaged in creating stimulating learning environments for children. -
Opened in 1992, the Kunsthal in Rotterdam is a key design in the portfolio of Rem Koolhaas and OMA, the renowned firm Koolhaas co-founded in 1975. It is part of the Museumpark, a park designed by OMA as well and the location of the Nederlands Architectuurinstituut NAi, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and the Museum of Natural History. The Kunsthal's exhibition space is divided into three large exhibition halls and two smaller galleries. The building houses also an auditorium and a restaurant.
This outstanding space for art is a prime destination for countless architecture fans every year. Tibor Pataky, architect and architectural historian, celebrates it in this inspiring book. He explains the history, the programmatic background, and the cultural references of the design, which has been adapted several times, and places it in the context of OMA's work of the 1980s and of the intellectual environment of Deconstructivism. Ten captivating photo series highlight the structure's outstanding qualities and its embedding in the park. New plans, especially drawn for this book, illustrate the shear points of OMA's design. The volume is a hugely attractive tribute to one of the most significant works of post-WW II architecture in Europe. -

Modern buildings in blackheath and greenwich : London 1950-200
Francisco Sutherland
- Park Books
- 15 Mai 2024
- 9783038603429
The book features 65 buildings in Blackheath and Greenwich by 38 architecture firms through images, plans, and concise texts
Explores the evolution of modern English architecture between 1950-2000, as well as the context of social and housing policies of the time
With new images by distinguished British architecture photographer Pierce Scourfield
An enclosed map with route suggestions makes the book also an unusually detailed architectural guide
Blackheath and Greenwich, in the southeast of London, proved to be an unusually fertile ground for modern architecture in the decades following WWII. Housing in particular became the prime field of work for many architecture firms, who designed a large number of residential buildings of various typologies, using new concepts and trying new solutions, inspired by the spirit and political developments of the time.
Modern Buildings in Blackheath and Greenwich is based on an extensive research project by architect Ana Francisco Sutherland. It analyses and celebrates outstanding buildings by well-known architects such as Eric Lyons, Patrick Gwynne, Peter Moro, Walter Greaves, and Chamberlin, Powell & Bon, alongside works by lesser-known firms. A total of 65 individual buildings and housing developments by 38 architects are featured with images, plans, and concise texts.
Sutherland also takes a broader look at the evolution of modern English architecture in the context of social and housing policies of the time. Brief biographical portraits reveal personal connections between protagonists that made Blackheath and Greenwich such an extraordinary field of design experimentation over five decades.
An enclosed map with suggested routes makes the volume also a guide of extraordinary detail for architects and architecture lovers alike. -

De la verticalité
François Charbonnet, Marine de Dardel, Patrick Heiz
- Park Books
- 15 Août 2024
- 9783038603696
A French-language edition exploring verticality in rapidly growing cities such as Zurich.
Densification of our cities is an imperative that inevitably brings the topic of new high-rise buildings and the addition of stories to existing buildings to the foreground of discourse. Architecture and urban design must increasingly address the issues of verticality at all stages of planning, design, and composition. Social and cultural aspects must be considered in this process as well.
De la verticalité combines two elements: a case study on the future of high-rise buildings in Zurich and an exploratory essay on the subject of verticality in philosophy, culture, and society. Together the threads form a dual commentary that highlights the many challenges posed by the mutation of our cities. Illustrated with numerous spectacular montages and visualizations designed to broaden thinking, this French-language book, which comes from the laboratory of the acclaimed Swiss architecture firm Made in, also offers concrete proposals aimed at architects and urban planners, politicians, and flâneurs alike. -
Features five holiday homes in Sweden designed by Mikael Bergquist, one of the country's leading specialists in small-scale timber architecture
Each house is documented with newly taken photographs as well as plans and sections
Offers a comprehensive survey of contemporary small scale timber construction in Sweden, which is little known outside the country
Sustainable architecture and building with locally sourced materials is highly topical
This book brings together five vacation homes in Sweden designed by Stockholm-based architect Mikael Bergquist. Realised over more than two decades, they are all located in the Swedish countryside and rooted in the Nordic tradition of timber construction and the simplicity and economy of Sweden's historic farm buildings. Bergquist's great attention to detail and careful choice of materials characterise these houses. They are united also by a close relationship to the surrounding landscape and nature, which is enhanced as an experience by the concepts of movement and the placement of passages between the outside and inside.
The houses are documented with photographs as well as plans and sections. In his supplementary essay, Bergquist writes about the special position of working as an architect on the periphery of Europe. He draws a picture of Swedish architecture that is marked by what he calls «fruitful misunderstandings» of current movements, and one in which the poverty of the rural population has been a major factor in the evolution of the design and construction of dwellings. -
