Yatora est un lycéen studieux à qui tout réussit. Pourtant, il ressent depuis toujours une impression de vide en lui. Jusqu'au jour où, par hasard, il tombe sur un tableau qui le subjugue littéralement... Très vite, Yatora réalise que peindre est le seul moyen de faire passer ses émotions et de se révéler. Cet événement le pousse à se livrer corps et âme à la peinture pour tenter le concours d'entrée de la plus sélective des écoles de Beaux-arts !

Yatora avait décidé de poursuivre des études prestigieuses pour répondre aux exigences de son entourage. Mais pour assouvir la frénésie dévorante du désir qu'il ressent en dessinant, il vise d'intégrer la prestigieuse université des Arts de Tokyo. Est-il prêt à sortir de sa zone de confort, à se confronter au regard des autres, à des talents accablants et, surtout, à surmonter sa peur d'échouer ?

Yatora entame sa deuxième année, envahi par le doute et l'angoisse, et ne ressent plus son enthousiasme des débuts. En plus, le professeur en charge de sa promotion n'est autre que l'impitoyable et stoïque M. Inukai... Mais des retrouvailles, et surtout une rencontre très inattendue, vont peut-être l'aider à retrouver sa passion pour l'art.

À deux mois des concours d'admission, le niveau monte, et Yatora se sent bloqué par son manque d'expérience. Heureusement, Mme Saeki, sa professeure du club d'Arts plastiques, Mme Ooba, qui le suit en cours de prépa, et Mori sont là pour le soutenir et lui ouvrir les yeux. Galvanisé, le jeune lycéen se lance alors dans la réalisation d'une toile aussi grande que celle que Mori avait utilisée pour son tableau des anges. Sa rage de peindre aura-t-elle raison de l'entreprise colossale dans laquelle il s'est lancé ?

La première année à Geidai s'achève avec un sentiment d'amertume et de frustration pour Yatora, qui veut prendre ses distances avec la peinture. Décidé à faire autre chose tout en renflouant son compte en banque, il répond à l'annonce d'une école de dessin afin de donner des cours aux enfants. Mais il ne se doute pas que la gérante de l'atelier n'est autre que son ancienne professeure d'arts plastiques, Mme Saeki...

À un mois de l'examen d'admission de Geidai, Mme Ooba, la professeure à la prépa d'Art, pointe du doigt les faiblesses de Yatora. Un coup dur pour le jeune garçon qui se donne corps et âme pour réussir. À quelques semaines d'affronter la première épreuve du concours tant redouté, il perd complètement pied. La douleur et la peur le paralysent. Mais il est encore temps de tirer les enseignements de ce passage à vide et de résister au renoncement...

Afin de fabriquer le mikoshi du festival culturel de Geidai, Yatora et ses camarades travaillent d'arrache-pied pendant plusieurs semaines. Mais n'en voyant pas le bout et croulant sous la chaleur de l'été, les étudiants atteignent leurs limites. Heureusement, les renforts arrivent, mais suffiront-ils pour finaliser le projet ? Plus inquiétant encore, Yatora n'a pas peint de toutes les vacances et n'arrive plus à retrouver la joie de dessiner...

Les étudiants de Geidai entament leur dernier projet de l'année qui va déterminer leur passage au niveau supérieur. L'enjeu est d'autant plus grand que le sujet est libre, et que des artistes de renom viendront évaluer leurs oeuvres. Ayant essuyé plusieurs coups durs, Yotasuke ne vient pratiquement plus en cours. Yatora tente de lui remonter le moral, mais il est lui-même assailli par le doute et se demande s'il aime vraiment peindre...

À peine entré à Geidai, Yatora déchante. Non seulement il se sent incompétent comparé aux autres étudiants, mais les professeurs lui font également comprendre qu'il doit commencer par oublier tout ce qu'il a appris jusqu'ici pour trouver sa propre identité artistique. Rien ne semble gagné pour Yatora, qui est aussi dépité qu'exaspéré... mais ouvert à la découverte d'autres centres d'intérêt !

Yatora a réussi l'exploit d'être admis au concours de Geidai du premier coup. Le coeur vibrant, plein d'attentes et d'inquiétudes à la fois, il fait ses premiers pas à l'Université des Arts de Tokyo pour goûter à sa nouvelle vie d'étudiant. Il va y faire des rencontres surprenantes, mais va également se confronter à la dure réalité des écoles d'art...

À la première épreuve du concours,Yatora réussit tant bien que mal à terminer son oeuvre, malgré l'incidentdu miroir cassé. À peine remis de leurs émotions, les candidats doivent déjà se remettre au travail dans l'espoir d'être admissibles pour la deuxième épreuve qui sera centrée sur la peinture à l'huile. Alors, pour détendre et stimuler ses élèves, l'extravagante Mme Ooba organise une excursion un peu spéciale. Cette sortie décoincera-t-elle Yatora qui redoute la discipline qu'il va devoiraborder dans trois jours ?

Grâce à son autoportrait, Yatora est parvenu à passer la première épreuve de Geidai. Curieusement, il affronte la suite avec sérénité... Mais, le jour J, il est pris d'un mal de tête qui le terrasse, et son éruption cutanée s'intensifie. Incapable de se concentrer, il finit par s'endormir en pleine épreuve !
